Grace’s Top Relationship Films at Raindance 2024

Hi! My name is Grace Scheller. I’m a new marketing intern here at Raindance in my undergrad studying communication arts. I’ve just recently joined the Raindance team earlier this week and I am so looking forward to furthering my interests in the independent film industry. As the new kid in the office, I’ve been very eager to get acquainted with our impressive 2024 film lineup.

That being said, my top 3 most anticipated films are listed below, although I’d highly encourage everyone to enjoy all the films in our programme.

Top 3 Relationship Films

1) Something’s More Than One Thing

Director: Jay Alvarez | USA 2024 | 110 Minutes | World Premiere

June 23, 2024 | 5:30 pm | Genesis | Tickets

Nominated for Spirit of Raindance award

In Jay Alverez’s contemporary “Something’s More Than One Thing,” a young couple searches the internet for relationship advice in an attempt to save theirs. What they find is not only directly contradictory but brilliantly satirical. The film’s commentary on modern relationships and how our rising online climate can affect them is certainly something to watch out for. If there’s one thing I appreciate in a film, it’s a deep dive into the connections we share with each other by allowing its audience an inward look at themselves.

2) Falling Into Place

Director: Aylin Tezel | UK/Germany 2023 | 113 minutes

June 21, 2024 | 8:40 pm | Curzon Soho | Tickets

Nominated for Discovery Award for Best Debut FeatureBest Debut Director and Best Performance in a Debut

“Falling into Place” features the love story of Kira and Ian and their relationship founded on the neglect of their personal demons. As their foundation crumbles, we are met with a story not only based on relationships with others but with ourselves. The film is a complex examination of what a stable connection is truly founded on. It’s not easy to love yourself before you love another person, and “Falling into Place” illustrates why, which is exactly what keeps you watching.

3. Sleep

Director: Jason Yu | Korea 2023 | 94 minutes | London Premiere

June 20, 2024 |6:00 pm | Curzon Soho | Tickets

Nominated for Discovery Award for Best Debut Feature, Best Debut Director and Best Performance in a Debut

Our theme of relationships takes a darker turn in Jason Yu’s “Sleep,” a comedy/horror about a young pair, one an expectant wife and the other a sleepwalking husband whose subconscious late-night habit puts his family and himself at risk. As a personal “Parasite” fan, I was immediately drawn to the film and I can claim with certainty that, just like in “Parasite,” leading man Lee Sun-Kyun and his surrounding cast definitely deliver. It’s a film full of dark comedy and unnerving suspense sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. A film so captivating you wouldn’t want to miss it.
